Happy Monday from the frozen tundra! It’s actually a lot warmer here than it was at the beginning of last week, but it hasn’t stopped snowing all day!
Today is Day 15 of the ACTION Challenge.
Today’s ACTION Step: ACTIVE Listening!
We’re moving our focus onto our audience this week. A great content strategy can only come into focus when we really know the people that we’re trying to reach and figure out their needs, expectations, and how we can best help them with our businesses.
So, today, you’re going to make a commitment to really listen to your clients/customers this week. If you have a meeting, take a phone call, or even interact with them in an email/message/chat take some real effort to listen to what they are saying. Eliminate any distractions while you communicate with them—even if that means you have to put your computer to sleep for a few minutes, and close your door to discourage interruptions. What do your clients and customers need from your business? Do they come to you when they are trying to learn something, or when they need something done because they don’t have the time or expertise to do it themselves? What is your relationship like?
After you are done with each communication, take some notes: consider the best way that you can communicate with your client, and write down some thoughts on what is the best way that you can serve your customers. If your customers rely on you to teach them things, then you’ll know that creating tutorials and how-to content is a great way to connect with them. If they come to you for your expertise, keeping them informed with curated information about the cutting edge developments in your field is a great way to connect with your clients.
Make listening to your clients a regular practice. You will not only improve your content, but you’ll start to hear what you can do to exceed your clients’ expectations. Let your customers do most of the talking. Ask them how you’re doing. Surprise them by sincerely asking how you can help them better. As you do this more often, and ACT on what you find out, your business relationships will begin to thrive.
